OnlyFans CEO Keily Blair has revealed how much the subscription-based platform – best known for its adult content – has paid creators since it launched in 2016.
Speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime conference in LA late last week, Blair said the UK-based company had paid out over $20bn in the past eight years.
While much of this has been for creators producing explicit content, Blair emphasized that OnlyFans offers all “artists the freedom to say what they want and be controversial and have a point of view.”
“Everyone assumes it’s sex content. Some of them IS sex content – and we’re very comfortable with that, we’re an inclusive platform and we’re that way for a reason,” she said.
“We believe it’s very important for adult content creators to have a safe space, to be able to make money, and also to be able to do so together with other content creators.
“We’re all adults, we’re all adults, we can all choose what content we subscribe to.”
Other social media platforms, Blair said, have “struggled” to introduce a subscription model similar to the one OnlyFans uses. The site does not sell ads or track user behavior, and creators rely only on subscriptions, pay-per-view events or tips from subscribers to generate revenue.
According to OnlyFans, creators earn 80 percent of all payments made on the platform.
“Pornography is free on the Internet. I think the reason people pay for OnlyFans is because they want to engage with those particular creators,” she said.
“This is because of the ability to personalize as well as search for specific content.”
For some consumers, she said, “it’s actually an ethical decision about how they choose to consume, especially adult content.”
Founded by father-son duo Guy and Tim Stokely, OnlyFans was sold in 2018 to Ukrainian-American entrepreneur and porn site owner Leonid Radvinksy.
A regulatory filing seen by Variety last month showed the platform had reported record revenue and profits last financial year, with payouts up 19 percent and the number of registered users up 28 percent.
“We continue to grow,” Blair told the Financial Times in February.
“I think everyone was worried we were going to be a pandemic bubble. We’ve proven that’s not the case. The company is also able to do so much for creators. That’s what excites me about the job.”
She also rejected suggestions that OnlyFans was just a “porn site”.
“We’re a site that hosts adult content, but we also host a variety of other content. And a lot of the people who create adult content also choose to create other content, so maybe yoga and nude yoga,” Blair said.
“Sites that are for adults should cater to all the interests of adults. A lot of people who are over 18 like sex, but they also like comedy, sports and music, so (it’s about) being able to to cater to our audience base and be able to provide opportunities for creators.”
